What a neat, well-thought-out little plot, thought Samantha, too unhappy to speak for a moment. The invitation to choose household linen which Sappha could quite well have done on her own; the splendid lunch, the conversation which had included her throughout the meal, so that presumably she would feel one of their circle-they had made it impossible for her to refuse, and over and above this was the dreadful hurt of knowing that Giles loved Antonia. She said at length: `May I think about it?"

'No,' said Giles at once. `There's a good deal of arranging and so forth to be done and we want to know now, and if you're on the point of asking me what business it is of mine, I'll tell you at once that it's not, but Sappha is far too sweet to explain, and Rolf won't because she wouldn't like him to, so I will. These two are on their way to Scotland to stay for a few days with some old friends; if you keep them hanging around for an answer they'll not get there, and I happen to know that they want to go rather particularly.'
